June - Librarian's chatter

Posted on Thursday July 02, 2009 at 03:36PM

Another beautiful day for Chautauqua celebrations! I am convinced that the Chautauqua Day parade is one of the best in Northern Alberta! Thank you to all of the CSIS agents of varying heights and ages that helped the library promote our Agent 009 Summer Reading Program.

Thanks to all of you that stopped by the library book sale and filled a purple bag. I forgot to wear sun block and my forearms are paying the price, but the “light breeze” certainly kept the mosquitoes off… as well as the tents covering the book sale!

I am always amazed at the sheer number of events that happen on Chautauqua Day and the number of volunteers that it takes to host this event. I was particularly impressed with the museum area. The conjunction of the UFA History trailer, the Seams like Sexsmith quilt show and watching real working blacksmiths in action made for a particularly pleasant oasis in the midst of all the action.   I even had a chance to visit the Paszkowski house with my husband.

Other highlights for me included pancake breakfast (great sausages!), the Local Market, the whole-hearted involvement of the Sexsmith Sabres football team, corn (three cobs!) from the Pathfinder food booth and the greased pole… and that was only on Main Street! Next year, I promise that I will take enough time off to make it around the corner and up to the Community Centre.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Registration starts for this year’s Summer Reading Program on Tuesday, June 23rd. This year’s theme is “Agent 009.”
There are many activities planned around a detective/spy theme. Library staff have been working at breakneck speed to ensure that every child has a way to participate.

The Reading Club portion requires reading only 30 minutes per day and your child can earn a prize for every five days that he or she logs. There will be a board game with suggestions for reading and prizes that children can play one turn a day. There are also three days of club activities for children of varying ages.
Children aged 3 – 5 will attend on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 – 11:30
Ages 6 - 8 will have a session on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00
Ages 9 and up will have a lot of fun on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00.
There will be a really big wrap up for all participants on August 19th.
